Bird of the Month - Bay-breasted warbler

This warbler passes through in May and summers in northern coniferous forests, feeding at all heights. It searches each leaf and flowers and also "flycatches" in air, eats bettles, flies ,moths, leafhoppers, grasshoppers, cankerworms and sometimes eats berries of Virginia creeper and mulberries. The nest is built on horizontal branch of spruce, hemlock, birch or other tree and even in shrubs.  Usually 5-50 ft.above ground.  It winters from Central Panama to N. Colombia and W. Venezuela. It rarely is host to cowbirds, only 2 records in July 1951 and June 1952. It has one record of a hybrid - a cross between a Bay-breasted warbler and a blackpoll warbler reported in 1958. Other names for this bird are Autumnal warbler and little chocolate-breast titmouse.
